A lot of Myrna Loy's exotic vamp characters in early talkies are very like some of her silent roles; her big transition was not silent/sound but the later switch to all-American "so nice to come home to" roles like Nora Charles. Greta Garbo's talking debut was delayed, agonized over, and then publicized to the hilt, but this was more a result of her Swedish accent than any fundamental shift in her persona or appeal. I think we could say that she was as big a star before and after the transition, for essentially the same qualities. Just a few nominations to start the discussion rolling.... Mary Astor didn't seem to have too much of a problem with the transition. I haven't seen enough of Bessie Love's silent films to know if her talkie persona was different, but she was quite winning in "Broadway Melody" and got an Academy Award for her performance in it.
