People here are talking like since the images are being copied verbatim from the panels of the comic to the movie screen that its completely following the novel. Ok, let's forget the visuals of one minutes and get to the meat of the matter: Each issue of Watchmen was 32 pages long and there were 12 issues. Let's do some math 32 x 12 = 384 pages. Average script lengths in H'wood: 120 pages for a two hour flick. Most Snyder will get for Watchmen: 150 minutes. And no they won't give him an extra 50 minutes, because this has to play in a theater as often as possible, which is directly related to the length of the film. So automatically right there, the book is not the movie, I don't care how many panels they copy or to what percentage they're copied. By the logic going on here, the pages inevitably missing from the film make the movie an "inauthentic" adaptation. So the real crux of the matter is with all the cutting and refashioning done to the story (which was inevitable), does the spirit of the book remain intact? You can't tell that from a trailer. You can tell the visuals are stunning, and Snyder is re-using the old slow-fast technique as some sort of trademarked camera move. But you can't tell if all the story re-workings are gelling, cause its just images. I don't know how everyone simultaneously forgot the instances of when they saw an awesome trailer for a film and then were let down by the final product. I mean shit, I was excited as hell waiting for TDK to come out, but even I had a few moments where I thought "This could possibly crash and burn HARD." And I never read Watchmen before seeing the trailer, and I thought the trailer was cool. So reading the book to like the trailer really means jack shit. Its an extra little "ooooh" for the fans who've read the book, but in the end, its the movie that has to pony up the goods first, THEN make you want to read the book. If the audience needs a pre-requisite in order to understand a movie right off the bat or to like the trailer, well then the filmmaker has failed, at least in the eyes of the viewer. |
