| Tropic Thunder is a hilarious, yet flawed film. It is a scathing satire of Hollywood, and is right on the money with most of its gags. The best thing about this film is Robert Downey Jr., who gives us his second classic performance in one summer. Likewise, Ben Stiller delivers what is probably the best performance of his career here. Jack Black is the weakest link of the three, but even he gives a funny performance (lets face it, he's the lesser actor of the trio). Matthew McConaughey (sp?) and a certain scientologist are also very solid. Unfortunately, there are several noticeable flaws in the script. The biggest problem is the 15 minutes or so before the climax, in which virtually NOTHING happens, and, with notable exceptions, isn't very funny. This long period of downtime may have killed the movie had the climax not been so great. Had most of those fifteen minutes been excised, we may have had a comedy classic. But, as it stands, Tropic Thunder is still a very good comedy and is definitely recommended. 8/10 |
