Topic: Who Should Direct The Batman Series Post-Nolan? Forum: JoBlo
Okay , this is my final pick , after careful consideration , and racking my brain , it's small so it didn't take long , there is one guy who can stage action to stunning effect , is a master at dark characterization , can ground fantastical situations in a palpable reality , and has one of the best directorial eyes for images of his generation . That guy is Alfonso Cuaron . I can easily see this guy bringing a unique vision to this world , and the film would look unbelievable , in addition to featuring some mesmerizing action sequences . All you need to do is watch Children of Men , and you'll see why this is the one guy who can take over after Nolan and not miss a beat . There would be no drop in quality whatsoever and in some respects i can easily see see him eclipsing what Nolan has done . I agree , all of a sudden Nolan has been elevated to a sort of demi Batgod , and people feel that nobody else should touch this franchise . He has done an admirable job of making Bat important again , but that doesn't mean that another director can't do great things with the franchise . I'm sure , if i remember correctly , when Bat 89 came out , most people felt that Burton was the only guy who could do a Bat film . Jack's joker was the standard for all comic book villains , people loved Keaton in the role , and all that nice stuff . We see what happened eventually , someone else brought their vision to life and now people can appreciate these incarnations . Of course it won't be the same , because whoever takes over , won't be doing so 20 years from the next one , WB is not going to let this puppy collect dust that long since their is monsy to be made and they will be coming off a successful run , unlike what happened after the embarrassing B and R ( still a wonderful cheesefest ) . Only problem is , the villains , because i have no doubt Cuaron can tear it up something fierce , but you can't keep on using the same villains , and after part 7 , we will have had another Riddler and Joker . They should also take the narrative in a different direction , not simply continue the story Nolan has started . Different take on Batman in a slightly different universe . It doesn't have to be an origin story , but an older , burnt out Bat can be good . A drinking , sometimes smoking fool ( like they would ever show batman smoking ) who is genuinely doubting his purpose , not simply confused about the need for a batman . I know it sounds nuts , but Schu touched on this neuroses in BF , and i wish they could have expanded on it . I'm thinking a bat who needs ben gay because of aching joints , maybe he even experiences a potentially life threatening illness , and he begins to sense his mortality . The character of batman has been exploited just about fully in the 6 films combined , but BW still hasn't been properly explored as a person . They have only scratched the surface concerning this compelling character .
