You can see my capsule Shakespeare reviews here: http://watershade.net/wmcclain/ws-movies.html I just spent an hour or so reading your whole site. Wonderful work. I've recently watched about six or seven King Lears, including one you don't mention, with Mike Kellin as Lear. (Kellin's pretty good, but most of it is rather awful -- particularly David Groh's Edmund and Daryl Anderson's Oswald.) I'm currently watching another you didn't mention, an Othello by the same producers as the Kellin Lear. This one is much better, with a magnificent William Marshall as Othello, quite well dealing with the complaint you had about other Othellos, that of the problem of Othello being "so noble yet so easily duped." For the first time, really, I bought the paradox, thanks to Marshall's performance. Ron Moody is pretty good as Iago, and Jenny Agutter is a fine Desdemona. The production suffers from the same cheapness and some amateurishness in small parts (and one larger one: acting teacher Joel Asher is just awful as Roderigo). But overall it's a much finer production. Jim Beaver |
