It was sort of nice to see it after all the hype has passed. Plus, with a new 42-inch HDTV and Blu-ray DVD player, I love watching movies at home now more than ever. I was expecting to hate it. I am always skeptical of genre movies that receive so much adulation, much of it prior to its theatrical release. I enjoyed it though. It made for great home viewing on a quiet summer night. I know the set up has bugged some people, but I didn't mind it. To me it felt like a real party attended by 20-somethings. The interactions rang true and it's a solid beginning. The reveal of the monster is handled extremely well. They show just enough at just the right moments. The initial attack, Brooklyn Bridge, subway, helicopter and finale are all really great. The visual effects, especially considering the sheer amount of them, are very convincing. It is often intense and suspenseful. I would have loved it to be R, but I understand why it isn't. The running time is perfect, and overall it is a satisfying monster movie. There are numerous flaws though, some major and some not. There are logic issues involving character decisions that I easily ignored because I knew they needed to keep the story going in a certain direction. Not a big deal. I also got a massive headache at times and found some of the shaky cam to be irritating. Again, I know that was the point so it didn't bother me too much. Larger flaws are the love story, acting and Hud. I didn't really care about any of these people. I didn't know them at all. I didn't give a shit if Rob found Beth. I had no investment in their relationship. I wanted a survival story, not melodrama. Also, the acting gets worse as the movie goes along. It's fine in the beginning when they're at the party, but whenever emoting was required, it got really bad. It's hard to cry on camera and these people just couldn't do it. I was not impressed by anyone's performance. Hud is just excruciatingly annoying. His comic relief is not remotely funny. His lines are terrible. I don't think a few laughs are uncalled for in a movie like this, but he is not funny at all. I hated him. I also have to wonder why they didn't tell it in real time, or closer to real time. In the end, after two viewings (one with the director's commentary), I think the filmmakers managed to achieve most of their goals. I really would have preferred more monster and survival, less Felicity, but ultimately it's an effective creature feature that I'd like to see more of. 7/10 |
