Really, all those characters have in this world is themselves. The government uses them to their own means, to kill their own kind in order to save an ungrateful world. The people think they're freaks of nature that should be destroyed. The only ones who really love them, and treat them with respect, are the ones right next to them. And so when the time comes that one of their own, one of their loved ones, are put in a position of danger, they choose them over the rest of the world. They're not being selfish, their thoughts are with the ones they love and not themselves. The ones being selfish is the world who turned their backs on them, not the other way around. I'd say their choices were the exact opposite of selfish. |
