If the answer to both of those questions is not Tim Burton's Batman, then you, my friend, are sadly blinded. Almost every part of this is wrong. First of all, you claim that 20th Century Fox and Sony had the idea of hiring a director not associated with the comic book world nor with blockbuster event movies because of Tim Burton's Batman. Half of that has a blatant problem: what is "a director associated with the comic book world"? Where is this "pool of directors associated with the comic book world" that could have been hired, but weren't? They don't exist, because there weren't many comic book movies at the time. So let's reword that. "20th Century Fox and Sony had the idea of hiring a director not associated with blockbuster event movies because of Tim Burton's Batman." Every studio anywhere has that option, and has had that option since forever. You can always hire proven talent, or not. For example, Gore Verbinski was hired to do Pirates, even though he wasn't used to anything of the sort. Was this because of Tim Burton's Batman? How about Michael Bay's first works? Were those because of Tim Burton's Batman? It's already shaky ground. But it gets even shakier. The two big "comic book projects" in the 90s are well known to everyone. They were Tim Burton's "Superman" and James Cameron's "Spider-Man". There you have your two examples. Tim Burton is a director associated with the comic book world, because he directed Batman. James Cameron is a director associated with big blockbuster movies, because he directed Terminator/Aliens, etc. So, what you're saying can't possibly be true. It can't be true that studios got the idea to not hire comic book associated directors or blockbuster directors, because they actually didn't have that idea, and hired comic book associated directors and blockbuster directors. The thing is though, there is no "James Cameron's Spider-Man". There is also no "Tim Burton's Superman". Those movies never happened. Could it be possible, then, that the reason X-Men and Spider-Man had the directors they had was because studios were tired of dealing with powerful eccentrics? Another thing to take into account is that X-Men was a pretty "nothing" movie. It's not ridiculously high budget, most of the actors aren't very well-known (Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen weren't really that known back then, and Patrick Stewart is famous as a tv actor). The director, Bryan Singer, was also not well-known. They just hired some nobody. Yeah, he'd directed a few good movies, but he wasn't going to demand full control or anything crazy like that. And how about the fact that Bryan Singer was hired to do Superman Returns? I think he qualifies as a "comic book associated director", since he, after all, directed comic book movies such as X-Men and X-Men 2. So what's going on here? So basically, your explanation of Burton's influence fails to take into account that: 1) Burton was hired for more comic book properties, and at that point he qualified as a comic book associated director.
2) Cameron qualifies as a big budget blockbuster director and he too had been attached to comic book properties.
3) The failure of those two projects had to have influence.
4) Bryan Singer, the guy who wasn't a comic book property associated director, became one and was promptly hired to do even more comic book movies.
