Title: Warlock: The Armageddon (1993) Director: Anthony Hickox Mini Review: Saw this one last night, had loads of fun with it. Its the sequel to the 1989 fantasy/horror film Warlock. It comes to us from director Anthony Hickox, who also directed films like Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Return of the Living Dead III, and the two Waxworks movies. The storyline for Warlock: The Armageddon, has the Warlock reborn, coming back to try and find five magical stones which can open up a portal and bring Satan himself onto earth, because according to this movie, Satan is "trapped" in hell and he needs these five stones to be released and start the Armageddon, the destruction of humanity and all that stuff. Coming from this director, it doesnt surprise me that the story is very similar to the story seen in Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. Actually theres many things between Hellraiser III and Warlock: The Armageddon. The premise is basically the same exact one, bringing hell on earth and the destruction of humanity. But theres also a couple of scenes that are very similar in nature, like for example, in Hellraiser III, old Pinhead is trapped inside of a work of art. In fact, if I remember correctly, for most of the movie Pinhead is a work of art, a statue with his face sculptured on it. On Warlock: The Armageddon, theres a sequence in which The Warlock transforms an art collector into a work of art, via some very cheesy computer effects. The effects range from pretty good (the rebirth of The Warlock was pretty decent) to the really crappy (the transformation of an art collector into a sculpture) to the pretty decent (telekenetic battle in the end). So what we get with Warlock: The Armageddon is one of those horror/fantasy movies in which the effects are sometimes decent, and sometimes laughable. This movies fantasy element is a bit higher then the first one. We have the Warlock himself who is always using his magic powers, flying around, floating, moving things with his mind and we have these characters which are a group of priests who are also really Warlocks (!?!), and they know all about the prophecies about the Warlock coming to free Satan, and they know all about the magical stones and all that. This was a weird angle for me, because can someone explain to me how christian catholic priests also dabble in magic which is strictly forbidden in the bible? I dont know. My advice is, dont question this movies logic too much, just go with the flow of this cheesy movie, and youll have more fun. Also, on this movie, everybody uses telekenisis. So at one point in the film, theres this all out battle between the forces of good and evil and everyone is throwing people around with their mental powers. So if you like movies where people are constantly flying through the air like Superman or moving things with the power of their mind, then this is the movie for you. Theres this whole sequence in which the good priests/warlocks are training their "chosen one" to do battle with the Warlock. And they are teaching him the ways of telekenisis and I dont know if it was just me, but the movie suddenly turned into The Empire Strikes Back, because they have one of the good Warlocks training the kid as if he was Yoda, and the kid is like Luke Skywalker learning how to use the powers by making mistakes. It was a little too much of a rip off. But what are you gonna do? By the ending of the movie, the kids all pumped up ready to do battle with the evil Warlock. But the Warlock is of course a billion times more powerful. Satan makes yet another appearance in this movie (he also appears in the first one) and I thought it was cool that his appearance was very much influenced by the Hammer Studios film The Devil Rides Out, which has the Devil appear out of hell in these neon colors, nice homage to that classic. The film gets extremely cheesy with its story, but if your into that sort of thing (like I am) then you should have loads of fun with this one. Rating: 2 1/2 out of 5
