Forum: JoBlo | | A couple months ago, I thought about movies that scared me, and WHY I got scared. I realized that what scares me the most is NOT SEEING EVERYTHING. The mystery of whatever is causing the haunts or murders - whatever - is what freaks me out the most. You can't size up something you can't see. THE OTHERS scared me - until it got stupid at the end (when you know what's going on). THE THING - You don't know who's a Thing or not. Constant fear! JEEPERS CREEPERS - I was creeped out until the Creeper is shown in full view. Then, the movie fucking blows. SIGNS - The pantry scene was an exercise in freakishness. JAWS - Even after seeing the shark, you still don't know where it's going to come from. The deep blue sea is full of mysteries, and so that's a lot of what made this movie work. ALIEN - Scary. When it is in full view, it's not as scary, but still fucking awesome. So, what works for me is when the terror is coming from something that I can't rightly SEE and I can't make a physical assessment of it. |
