They already made Disaster Movie. It was released in 1980, it was called Airplane!, and it was actually funny. These Movie movies have all the potential in the world to be funny. There's nothing I like better than a good intelligent satire of popular culture, and if that's what these movies were, then I wouldn't mind them at all. But Seltzer and Freidberg are subscribers of the "Hey, remember this?" school of comedy wherein "reference = funny", and no further effort needs to go into the script than that. That's the main thing that hocks me off about these movies - they could be a lot funnier if the people who made them actually gave a damn. Putting aside the fact that this is the laziest spoof of disaster movies I've ever seen (apparently, a meteor is headed for Earth and threatens the lives of a bunch of movie characters from the 2007-2008 season), the least they could do is actually analyze what they're parodying. For instance, the opening shot where Iron Man gets crushed by a cow - that's not funny because it doesn't have anything to do with anything in Iron Man. Hannah Montana using her dying moments to plug her new album - that's not funny because Miley Cyrus isn't known for being a shameless self-promoter. And then there's the other problem with these movies, in that they don't expect anybody in the audience to know when to laugh. Juno's baby kicking Carrie from Sex and the City in the face - that's not funny because they over-explain the joke. Of course it's the baby's foot; we don't need Juno to say "This is my baby's foot", otherwise it kills what little joke there is in the first place. Look, popular culture references can be funny if they're done right, but they're not funny in and of themselves. Unfortunately, Seltzer and Freidberg refuse to acknowledge this fact, so it's safe to say that this movie will be just as horrible as Epic Movie was. It even seems to be making the exact same mistakes as Epic Movie - a mishmash of unrelated pop culture references thrown in a blender and sapped of all their humor, wound around one very flimsy and unfunny premise. And from the looks of the trailer, this one has even less to do with disaster movies than Epic Movie had to do with epic movies. By my count, the last one spoofed The Chronicles of Narnia, The Da Vinci Code, Nacho Libre, Snakes on a Plane, X-Men, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Harry Potter series, Superman Returns, Casino Royale, Borat, and Click - do any of those really fit the definition of "epic"?. And now, according to all the promotional material I've seen, this one's taking on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Enchanted, Hancock, The Love Guru, You Don't Mess With the Zohan, The Simpsons Movie, Knocked Up, Sex and the City, Juno... For God's sake, they might as well just call this Movie Movie.
