Topic: Lazers, Swords and Cheese. The cheesy 80s sci/fi fantasy movie thread! Forum: JoBlo
Saw Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone last night out of sheer nostalgia. The rental of this 80s cheez was a direct result of doing this thread. I was so curious for it, same way Im curious right now for watching Battle Beyond the Stars and Star Crystal. So how was it? Well, it was exactly what I was expecting. It gave me the same exact feeling I get when I watch films like Ice Pirates. Its silly, its extremely cheezy, but who the hell cares cause its so much fun! At one point, the heroes stop for a break to eat something and guess what this hero has for lunch in a cold distant alien planet? Hot Dogs! Spacehunter had a couple of cool things going for it. One, Molly Ringwald is in it. Shes this annoying homeless girl who befriends the hero Wolff. She helps him get around the strange planet of Terra Eleven. Shes all scruffy looking through out most of the movie, and she looks all dirty and banged up most of the time. Shes also whinning all the time. But it was cool to see such a young Molly Ringwald in one of her very first roles ever. It was also cool to see Ernie Hudson of Ghostbusters and The Crow fame, playing the role of a bounty hunter called Washington friend of our hero. They are all in search for these three girls who crash land on this strange planet by mistake. I thought it was so cheezy that they were on some sort of Space Cruise through the galaxy admiring all the different planets and stars and suddenly a meteor storm hits their cruise ship and they eject and crash land into the wild planet, of course they end up in the clutches of the evil dictator of the planet and in comes our anti hero/bounty hunter Wolff to save them. The villain is played by non other then "Mr. 80s sci-fi" Michael Ironside. I didnt even know it was him who played the villain in this movie. I use to see this movie when I was like 10. But now I see him and I immediately recognized him. The villain is the stupidest thing in the movie. He is this rotting corpse, half-machine, half man, who moves around on this forklift thing that carries him around. He looks like he cant do shit to anybody inside of all those cables and gadgets. His hands are two giant mechanical claws that look as unpractical as they probably were while they were shooting this movie. The villain doesnt look like he could inflict any harm on anybody. But for some reason, everyone on this planet decides to worship this hunk of metal and junk as their leader. For some reason everyone fears him. Whatever. Anyhows, the real plot of the film gets sillier then you could ever wish for. Cause in reality its all about Michael Ironsides character, who by the way is named "Overdog", trying to get some Pootie Tang. He wants the young earthgirls to suck the life force out of them (ala The Dark Crystal or Lifeforce) so he can continue living forever, and fulfill his earthly pleasures with them as well. So its all really about a horny villain looking for some action. Silly, I know. Also, I was always on the look out for "3-D moments" and I couldnt help and wonder how they mustve looked with my 3-D glasses on in the darkness of some theater in the 80s. Thats the sad part about 3-D movies, if you dont see em when they are in theaters...thats it, they are gone forever. You will most likely never get to see it on 3-D, the way it was meant to be seen ever again. Even stranger still? This movie was produced by Ivan Reitman! All in all? Movie was cheap, you could tell the spaceships were miniatures, it was silly. The plotline was the silliest thing ever, rescue the girls from the horny villain. The villain was laughable looking even though Im sure their purpose was to make him look menacing. In one seen Wolff goes "Thats Overdog? Impressive looking bastard!" Heh, they probably thought they were doing the coolest looking villain ever, in fact, he looks restrained. TRapped, unable to wreck any kind of havok except from a short distance. If he grabs you with those claws, your probably fucked. But still, I managed to enjoy the whole low budget affair. Its just one of those 80s movies where the hero went from one monster to the next in a weird planet until they reach their goal. Movie ends in classical 80s movie fashion: by blowing up the villains castle. Just the way almost every other 80s movie ended. I couldnt help noticing similarities between this movie and Serenity. Bounty Hunter/anti hero, has to go on crazy adventures in a strange planet with a young girl. He has a small spaceship (all banged up) and has a small road vehicle in it, same as the hover car in Serenity. Anyhows, worth a watch, if you have tolerance for high cheez that is.
