It makes for frustrated viewings since I can't fully get into it. He has some great dialogue in there every so often and great ideas but his love for his own dialogue and indulgences take the movie down. Reservoir Dogs is an example. He does a lot with very little and had me going. But the Mr. Orange subplot does nothing for me and just sinks the movie for me. Considering a lot of it is based on stuff that doesn't happen or advance the plot in any way (hence my dislike for flashbacks), it deflates my opinion on it highly. Pulp Fiction suffers the same fate. I looooooove the Jules/Vincent stuff and that whole odyssey. Great stuff and could've made the movie for me if we followed them more. But mixed in with the Bruce Willis stuff and the Fabienne/hilbilly subplot and it took me out of the movie. To me, it's like stopping Goodfellas midway through and putting the third act of Dick Tracy in it. Jackie Brown is very long but it doesn't suffer the same flaws I feel. Ironically, it's based on something other than Tarantino's own ideas and is heavily Elmore Leonard. I don't have anything bad to say about it. Kill Bill goes right back to my main issue with him. There's some great stuff there and shows he can do some great action scenes. Even tells an alright story but the Sonny Chiba scenes were a movie killer and the entire third act of Volume 2 drag the whole thing down. That's almost exactly what I said...right down to the abysmal third act of Kill Bill: Vol. 2 Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this way. The only difference is that I actually like the whole Butch thing. But it does demonstrate how Tarantino's lowest common denominator when desperately trying to provide entertainment is to shock and disgust and take it so OTT that he forces you to notice. |
