Quote: Considering mainstream audiences have loved all of his movies, I don't think anything is becoming evident other than mainstream audiences love his movies, as do critics. I think Tarantino's fresh, confident style in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction won him a lot of good faith from audiences and critics alike. But as evidenced by later reactions towards Jackie Brown (which I actually like), Kill Bill, and Death Proof, it seems the "wow" factor associated with Quentin has begun to wear off somewhat. The problem is that there's very little substance or maturity to his work. His characters are caricatures, and his increasingly self-conscious dialogue usurps screentime to the detriment of the narrative. And as time goes on and Quentin continues to repeat himself, the fresh sheen that once gave films like Pulp Fiction a free pass simply becomes yet another cinema cliché. Albeit one that he sort of "invented". And something that actually serves as a pace killer. |
