Rarely have I ever been more uncomfortable while watching a film (and I know that was the point). This is anything but a pleasant viewing experience. It is not entertaining. But man is it fascinating. It's also the perfect example of a movie accomplishing its goals, something worth commending here. Haneke directed the shit out of this. His framing is exceptionally effective and I love the way he lingered on a mundane shot while something major happened out of view. He created a hell of a lot of tension as well. The scene where the kid escapes and the shooting while Paul is in the kitchen are two prime examples. The last 30 minutes or so are shocking in their brutality, and Haneke was smart to keep most of it offscreen. The casual nature of the killing of a family is hard to watch. The acting is sensational all-around. I have always loved Roth & Watts and they are excellent. Pitt really impressed me as well. Normally I am not a fan of his but he is just ridiculously creepy and detestable. One thing puzzled me a little. After the son is shot, I found the reaction of the parents to be a little muted. Granted, they did show some emotion, but I expected blatant hysterics. Their son's blood is all over the wall and his dead body is just laying on the floor. Maybe it was shock or maybe their survival instincts were in high gear because of the situation, but they didn't react in the way I anticipated someone would. This is a true horror movie, not bullshit pretenders like The Strangers. This is provocative stuff that gets under your skin and truly disturbs. 8/10 |
