A - List directors usually don't purpose projects as risky as Shyamalan's projects. They're usually very unorthodox and hard to sell to an audience as it is, it's only natural that some studios wouldn't want to take the risk on them even with Shyamalan's name attached. Really, there are multiple reasons why studios might pass on a project. Budget, lack of marketability, fully booked for the year, whatever. Cameron had trouble getting Avatar made because it's budget for the longest time, does that mean his career is over? Not by a long shot. He's the pure definition of A-List. And even if Shyamalan becomes a B-list director, that doesn't mean his career is over. He'll still write his own projects and direct them, they'd just be lower budget. As long as his name is M. Night Shyamalan, and he made The Sixth Sense, someone's going to take him up on his deal based on name-sell alone.
