The stories get progressively darker and more complex, Harry ages as both a teenager and a sorcerer and it's all very entertaining to read/watch. I highly recommend you give the series a second chance. If you don't want to read all the books (which I STRONGLY recommend you do btw if you want the whole story) you should give the films a shot. They get better as they go. I agree; where the first two-three books play out more like children's books, they take a sudden turn towards a darker story in the fourth and continue for the rest of the series. I think they're all well-written books and the movies aren't half bad either (from those I've seen anyway - haven't seen the fifth yet). For me, it's not difficult to understand why they're popular with kids and families.
