I loved how the tension and suspense was successfully stretched out from frame one, and never got boring at any second. Masterfully done in that respect; I can understand a lot of people being bored to death within twenty minutes. However, I realized five minutes before the movie ended that, in the end....we knew how it was going to end, and that was the movie's own fault. Right in the beginning, that voiceover said there was a massacre. So OBVIOUSLY those two main characters are NOT going to live. In retrospect, that made me a little unhappy with the movie as a whole - they basically told you how it'll end, now you just have to sit through 70 minutes before you actually see it. It still doesn't sit well with me. But the biggest, second, and the only other gripe I had was in the last five SECONDS - you know, when Kristen grabs the kid's arm and screams, supposedly to get one final freakout from the audience before it ends. Well, the movie was actually realistic up until that point. Scary, full of tension, quite possible....and then they go ahead and end on a sour note. They decided to take the "let's end like so many other horror movies and have a big final scare!" ending, which definitely was needless. Even though it was in the last five seconds, it kinda ruined the atmosphere of the movie for me at that point (again, ruined in restrospect). It should have ended as the killers drove away after stopping for those kids. The ending was basically ruined in the beginning of the movie (but getting there was a blast!), and the final few seconds was completely unnecessary and unrealistic. In the end though, I'm torn between saying "I really liked it" and "I wanted to like it more, except for these things, so it was just alright." |
