My brother-in-law just finished eight weeks of Navy basic training (or whatever they call it) and this is the movie he wanted to see this weekend. I like the first three, but none is anywhere near my favorite movie of all-time or anything like that. I haven't seen one in its entirety in many years. However, I remember them being a lot more entertaining than this one. The whole thing felt so by-the-numbers to me, like this is the movie the talent in front of and behind the camera can pull off when they're not even trying. And it never felt like they were really trying all that hard. Ford and Shia don't have any chemistry together. I never believed that the latter was the son of the former. Winstone is a great actor but he's dull in a thankless role. Blanchett is OK but it's far from her best work and the character is not a memorable villain. Allen is not a very good actress. There are some entertaining moments. The first scene of Indy & son in Peru is cool, the car chase against the cliff is nifty, and I liked the bit with Indy in the nuke town. That's about it though. I saw it yesterday afternoon and I'm struggling to remember it all. There's way too much CGI for my liking, as well as excessive silliness and scenes that felt like they belonged in a different movie. Plus, the story is a disaster. The last 15 minutes are unintentionally hilarious. This is certainly no Iron Man. I don't care if I ever see it again. Even free on a rainy day afternoon it's painfully mediocre. 5/10
