It was better than I thought it would be - I was expecting a dismal failure but it wasn't. I went in with low expectations and came out happily surprised. Right off the bat I'll say that image of Indy walking up the hill seeing the nuclear blast was gorgeous and it's going to be one of the most awesome images we'll get to see this year. It was almost like looking at a painting...it was beautiful. It was also a nice representation of Indy, who represents the past, in the shadow of the future - which is the nuclear bomb (technology, etc...). The action was over the top but that's not surprising considering the nature of these movies. Like I said in the rant thread about this movie, it's not like these movies are meant to be super-realistic anyways. Old serials were full of outrageous moments as well...most action films are loaded with them. The acting was great all around. The humor was good...I loved how the film played with Indy's age and the changing world. I got a kick out of hearing the Everly Brothers in an Indy film. There were some nice touches when they referred to the earlier films. When Mutt smiles after the bike chase and Indy frowns at him - brought back Last Crusade when his dad frowned at him after Indy had laughed. The one thing that did bother me was at the beginning at Area 51. When they first arrive, you can tell they were on location. As the scene progresses, you can tell they are now in a studio and this is a reshot scene..the shadows, lighting, etc don't match. The vine-swinging was a bit much, but at least we didn't get a Tarzan yell. I'd give it a 8/10. |
