I've seen this film twice now. I loved it every bit as much the second time as the first and more. Upon my second viewing, I dragged my wife, who isn't really into movies or superheroes. She reluctantly went in and came out saying "We are gonna own that when it comes out on DVD." The script for this film was nearly flawless. No dialogue was wasted. Every scene had great purpose and direction. It was just amazing to watch this story come alive. There is a real transformation for hero Tony Stark as the film progresses. Building the suit and experimenting with it made for some hilarity as he got used to his new gadgets and gear. His interacions with Pepper were warm without being too touchy feely. There was real chemistry between them without being too gooey and over the top. Some moments were accentuated with embarassment and awkwardness while others played on the feelings under the professional relationship. I'm glad the romantic involvement was minimal and underlying. The action scenes were great, and the special effects were pretty good as well...although not perfect. Direction on the film was pretty close the mark. There were some scenes that could have used minor tweeking, but nothing to complain about really. Cheese happens in comic films whether you want it or not. The supporting cast of this film was terrific. While Terrence Howard seemed to blend into the background in some scenes, in others he was on his game. Gwyneth Paltrow took ownership of her character as Pepper. This is what other supporting cast members have failed to do in films of this kind. Jeff Bridges makes a memorable Obediah, playng the corporate asshole with zeal. His competitiveness and cut-throat approach to business add a nice dimension to the conflict between himself and Tony. There is an obvious rift once Tony comes back from Afghanistan and shows a change of heart. The conflict eventually boils over between them, and Bridges handles the scenes very well. Who'd have thought he could play such a corporate baddie? But the real story here is Robert Downey Jr. I've not been more impressed with any role in any superhero film. As Tony Stark, he dominates every scene he's in. He shows great comedic timing, well handled emotion, and the eccentricity of being a boy genius turned womanizing, scotch drinking warrior. And in the progression of the story, the character takes changes seriously when he sees the devastation his company is causing. And he delivers true remorse and desire to change and make things right at the right time. As he dons the yellow and hot rod red suit, the effects work well with his character. It's as if he saw the scenes in his head. Films like this aren't easy to make and seldom come off so well. This is one of the rare times I leave the theater with such great satisfaction. There are so many terrible films out there (see also: Fantastic Four, X-Men sequels, all the Spiderman films). If only every film could be prepared and delivered as well as Iron Man. 9/10
