People have asked this question before and it always gets confusing for me. In my opinion, "stoner" movies are movies that are about smoking weed, the weed people smoke, people trying to get weed to get high or the people smoking the weed and what happens after they smoke. It is for this reason that I do not think that movies like Dazed and Confused is a "stoner" movie. I know they smoke weed and all that but it's not about weed or smoking weed or what happens to people while under the influence of weed at all. In other words, weed is only something that the characters do in the movie. That's it. The same goes for The Big Lebowski, the character in the movie is a stoner but it's not a stoner movie. If that was the case then why is Wonderboys not considered a "stoner" movie? I mean, Michael Douglas' character Grady smokes weed all day, everyday. I mean the whole resolution of the film is him realizing that living in a haze is not a happy or healthy way to live. Some of the most pivotal and funny scenes in the film are about smoking weed. But still, it is not a "stoner" movie. Now...Up In Smoke, on the other hand is about two "stoners" that smoke enormous amounts of weed, trying to score a "lid" somewhere, anywhere and end up going to Mexico and unbeknownst to them, end up smuggling a van made entirely of weed. That, my friends, is a "stoner" movie. With that said, here is my top 5: 1. Up In Smoke 2. Harold and Kumar Go to Whitecastle 3. Half Baked 4. Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay 5. Grandma's Boy Honorable mention: Saving Grace, Rolling Kansas, Homegrown |
