If you can't relate to what the 60's were about than you probably won't like the movie. 9/10 That's funny because I love reading about the 60's but the drug use isn't the only thing that interested me. It was the political movements. I'm actually bitter towards hippies because they could have done some good for this country, but instead they got selfish and stupid on drugs and dropped the ball. I think Hunter S. Thompson summed it up very well in his Wave speech. It was also a fascinating time for music as well. I love 60's psychedelic, pop, R n B, blues, jazz, you name it. It was all great stuff. So I do connect with the 60's. It would be the one decade I'd like to go back to in American history. I just don't like the film. I just think it's sloppy filmmaking. The pacing of the film is just terrible. Camera work was shoddy. Hopper took a lot of concepts from French new wave filmmaking but he just went around with his friends, got high and filmed scenes. It lacks cohesion but isn't entertaining enough or artsy enough to get away with its anti-structure. Again, I love Nicholson in it. He was great, but I didn't care for Fonda or Hopper, who I have liked in future films. Just not this one.
