Forum: JoBlo | | Taking the heat off of Crystal Skull for a while, I figured I would open up a chat of the other black sheep of the Indy series. Temple of Doom. Now, Temple has been my childhood favorite for years. Raiders is better made, but I just love Temple of Doom. I think Harrison Ford gives his best performance as Indy, the action is amazing and right on par with Raiders. I like Short Round and I likeWillie. People bitch about Willie because she whines to much but I dont see it. Ya, she definately whines, but not to the point of her being unbearable. She's no Marion, which is good. Not every Indy girl is gonna be a two fisted hellion like Marion. She doesnt have the chemistry with Ford that Karen Allen which is a little drawback but she's not dead weight. I particularly like the little bedroom banter they exchange. Its pure Indy! Short Round is probably the least annoying kid sidekick ever and actually has something to do. His chemistry with Indy is cute without becoming stupid. I think half the reason people shit on Shorty is his accent. If he didnt have the accent, people wouldnt hate on him so much. And now for the tone of the film. The other big critique is the obviously darker tone of the film. So freakin' what if its not just like Raiders! I embrace Temple even more for being its own movie and not a direct sequel like Crusade was. Not every Indy movie has to have him chasing a religous artifact and fighting Nazi's. He can go on different adventures you know. Other fans have said they Feel Temple of Doom is even more in line with the serials Spielberg and Lucas were trying to create with Raiders. I have to agree. I'm not denouncing Raiders by any means, but Temple of Doom is even more pulpy than Raiders and its also the purest adventure of the whole series if that makes any sense. Dark caves, gross food, bugs, death traps, cult rituals, pits of lava, chase through the tunnels, wall of water, bridge antics...Temple is pure movie magic if you ask me. The dark tone never becomes to dark and the film has the same humor and spirit as Raiders. The score is another big plus. Am I the only one who thinks the score for Temple of Doom is highly underrated? It rocks! Its darker, meaner, and never misses a beat. The set design and cinematography is also awesome. The red lighting and steam of the Temple is great looking. The hate this movie gets from fans baffles me. Aside from the hate Willie and Short Round get, I honestly cant see why any Indy fan would hate Temple of Doom. 10/10 |
