Honestly 22 minutes of apes growling at each other could not have been done in 2 or 3 minutes, I always though Kubrick was laughing at people who praised him for this film with that first scene that is so endless. You know, I used to be a 2001 hater. I used to think the movie was as many people say "boring". But then I grew up a little...decided to actually grant the movie my full attention and not give up till the very end. And now its one of my all time favorite movies ever made. That opening scene with the ape men is not dull or overly long. It last just enough to let you know how tough life was for those first ape men, living in a world they didnt not completely understand yet. Those scenes show how their life was pretty uneventful, and yes even boring. Personally I truly admire Kubrick for doing what he did with this film. When I watch those scenes, I feel like I am being transported to that time. You feel the stillness of those days, no cars, no planes, no buildings. Just "man" and the wild. The cinematography in those scenes is pitch perfect and so beautiful. Im amazed how well this movie still holds up. The images are crystal clear, colors are perfect, the movie just looks and sounds awesome. That classical score...damn, those first few images when the ape men learn to use their first tool and start smashing the skulls of dead animals with it, that is a classic image right there! Showing mans first steps into intelligence. Those scenes where the ape find the monolith for the first time, they are so enigmatic, cause the first time you see it you have no freaking idea what the hell it is. And then the transition into the future...with the spaceships demonstrating visually the evolution from ape man to space man. I mean, that movie is a masterpiece in its own right. Then your sucked into the mystery of "what is the monolith?" And into the whole thing with the ships computer going ballistic, once your into the whole mystery of it, and the fact that its the first manned trip to Jupiter and theres no real way of knowing whats really waiting for the crew once they get there, you simply cannot stop watching the movie. Some of the shots are amazing and they still make me think about how they were done. But best of all? Stanley Kubricks awesome direction and attention to detail. Everything in the frame is perfect. Every color, every word, every sound...nothing short of brilliant. People who say its a boring film I feel arent really giving it a chance. |
