| While I don't dislike any of the following films, I definitely don't think they're as brilliant as everyone else seems to think: "GoodFellas" (I just don't find any of the characters all that engaging, except Joe Pesci, but even there you could argue he's just playing a more amped-up version of his "Raging Bull" character...plus, he doesn't live to see the final act -- I preferred the darker, more depraved "Casino") "Duck Soup" (the majority of its most infamous jokes are fairly obvious -- "A Night at the Opera," "Horse Feathers," and "Animal Crackers" were all funnier, and less obvious, IMO) "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein" (again, most of the jokes in these films are quite obvious -- I thought "The Producers" and "Silent Movie" were funnier...and, again, less obvious) "A Shot in the Dark" (I still think the original "Pink Panther" film is the best; it's more of an ensemble effort, as opposed to just another Peter Sellers vehicle...not that there's anything wrong with those ) "Saving Private Ryan" (as with "GoodFellas," none of the characters really did much for me; a bunch of stock WWII types perpetually whining 'This Ryan better be worth it...') "The Matrix" (I don't think its 2 sequels are as bad as everyone else does, but even though the original is still the best, I don't get all the fuss over it -- maybe it's my lack of interest in martial arts) "The Sixth Sense" (I really liked it the first time around, but its brilliance fades a little with each repeated viewing -- I actually preferred "Unbreakable"...though Mr. Shyamalan is basically exposing himself as a citizen of One-Trick-Ponyville by continually repeating these formulas in each of his subsequent films) |
