Seriously, though, I don't think that this year's winner should come as a surprise. Sure, the forum members nominate the films, but anyone and everyone can vote and I think that JoBlo has a lot more daily visitors than many of us can imagine... Also, a popular blockbuster winning Favourite Film at the Schmoes isn't something new at all. Just look at the 2005 awards. The winner? Batman Begins. Great popcorn movie? No doubt, probably one of the best in years, maybe decades. But best movie OF THE YEAR? This is the year that brought us Munich, Brokeback Mountain, The Constant Gardener, Good Night and Good Luck... and yet we selected Batman Begins, a movie based on a comic book about a rich guy who gets pissed off that his parents died, dresses up as a bat and beats up creepy folks with magic masks, and driving around down-town in a tank. Now again, don't get me wrong - I like the film - but come on, you can't deny that a movie like Munich has far more depth and meaning behind it. My point? The Schmoes are just what they are... the awards for the schmoes, the average Joe's, the people who go out and make movies like 300 or Batman Begins blockbusters. And maybe if more people would have seen No Country for Old Men it WOULD have won. But you can't argue with $60 mil versus $300 mil, and while many of us (including most of us who post in this thread) take pride in our extensive knowledge, understanding and love for everything that is film, the average person (and the bulk of those who vote for the Schmoes) haven't seen No Country for Old Men, and are bored by art-house fare like There Will Be Blood, and not fascinated. And I totally understand - I don't expect the average person on the street to go out and enjoy There Will Be Blood... and I can complain about that all I want, but a fact is still a fact and I have no choice but to accept it, damnit! |
