Well, I think everyone alpha male on the planet would be reading comics (whether they were illiterate or not). Alright, I'll admit; call me a comic book loyalist. However, on the other hand, I'm a loyalist to movies, spies, Jennifer Garner, books, and oxygen, too. Well, of course there are exceptions for some folks (because they are either unimaginative, handicapped, close minded, or are concerned by whats acceptable within society). In today's present reality, comics are publically regarded that they are for children and or teens. Furthermore, comics reputation not having faired well over the years hasn't helped matters either. In fact, it seems like some gruesome fairy tale now, but there actually was a time when comic books were literally burned in the streets! In the mid-50s the book "Seduction of the Innocent" by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham helped trigger a firestorm of anti-comics hysteria. Wertham's book implicated comics in everything from juvenile delinquency to sexual perversions to race hatred. Public ire descended most fiercely on gruesome crime and horror comics which young readers of the day had developed an insatiable appetite for. In 1954, a Senate subcommittee on juvenile delinquency convened in New York to tackle the issue. It became a public relations disaster for comics. However, thanks to the first amendment to the US Constitution. Congress was unable to officially censor comics. Yet, on that same year, comic publishers agreed to a strict code of ethics that would dominate the industry for decades to come (AKA: The Comic Code Authority). Comic's status in the public eye can rise and fall with great fickleness. In fact, obscenity laws continue to hound comic books to this very day (which doesn't help the image of comic books). Furthermore, governement policies can have more subtle effects on comics, as well; such as California's tax policy which treats comics art as a commodity due to its supposed lack of artistic merit. So in other words, some folks would rather die than be caught reading a comicbook; which doesn't help the business of comics all to well. Which I'm sure is just part of the many reasons why a good number of comicbook shops have closed up shop over the years (also probably due to comics high prices, too). Anyways, in my conclusion, many folks probably wouldn't care if comics business just suddenly curled up and died. Which I don't need to tell you, is not good (whether you are into comics or not). |
