When it wasn't copying the 1978 movie, it was throwing in everything imaginable, including the kitchen sink. There were only two good scenes in the movie, IMO: the young Kent running and jumping in the cornfield; and the brief Michaelangelo moment during the rescue of the Lane 'family' from the sinking ship. Probably John Williams was paid well for the use of his music from the 1978 movie, but he wasn't credited well. Right after the prominent words, 'music by John Ottman', if you looked fast you could see the brief, blurry words, 'Superman theme by John Williams', but actually the movie used at least four themes from the old movie: the Krypton theme, the midwest home theme, the flying love theme, and of course the main titles. It would have been nice if the main titles had used some different arrangements, but it sounded exactly like the original orchestration. In fact, if the same recording had been used we wouldn't have known the difference. Kevin Spacey provided a couple of slightly amusing evil moments, but otherwise the humor was the same tired old 'bumbling Clark' stuff. It's always a mystery when a sure-fire movie like this one doesn't surprise us with some decent writing. It's not like there would be any risk in doing so. |
