Topic: Apocalypto... One of the Most Underrated Films in Recent Memory? Forum: JoBlo
Meh, it's not really underrated in my opinion, it was an entertaining adrenaline rush and really nothing more. It didn't have anything insightful to say about the Mayan culture and was more of an exercise in violence and revenge than anything else. I think Mel Gibson makes some entertaining flicks, but why does he have to include heavy amounts of torture and brutality in his most recent efforts? I understand that the Mayans did believe in ritual sacrifice, but the violence comes first and the story second in Apocalypto. All in all it doesn't have that much more substance than 300, which isn't bad because both are solid and fun films, but I honestly thought a film on this subject would have more to say...oh well...
