The good thing about the summer is that the experience of going to the movies can be truly memorable even when the films themselves aren't. This thread is for discussing your most memorable summer blockbuster experiences (not necessarily your favorite movies). The only rule is to choose big summer hits from the post-"Jaws" era. Here are mine: "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) -- I loved everything about this movie, which I saw about half a dozen times that summer. I was working as a busboy in a restaurant that stayed open late, so I'd often sleep until noon. On several occasions my day consisted of rolling out of bed just in time to drive over to the local mall theater to catch a matinee of "Raiders" before heading downtown to work. "Return of the Jedi" (1983) -- I remember lining up for this with friends the Wednesday it opened at a theater near the Charles River in Boston. It was in the middle of our first-year law school exam period, so we brought our books and sat on the ground studying while waiting for the lengthy queue to start moving. Then we had to hope no one from the show emptying out would shout any spoilers. "Aliens" (1986) -- My future wife and I saw this on our first formal date in the Georgetown area of Washington, DC. The theater was packed and there was much excitement and screaming. She was often terrified, which I didn't mind. :) "Batman" (1989) -- My wife was pregnant when we saw local hero Michael Keaton don the cowl for the first time. Audience anticipation and enthusiasm were tremendous. Late in the movie, when the Batplane rose above the clouds and was briefly silhouetted against the moon, forming the Batsignal, everyone cheered. "Jurassic Park" (1993) -- I have never looked forward to a movie as eagerly as I did the first JP flick. I had loved Crichton's novel and was involved in an organization called The Dinosaur Society (thanked in the credits at the end of the film!), so this was a sort of once-in- a-lifetime experience. Later that summer we took a trip to Alberta, so it was a very dinosaurish season all the way around. "The Phantom Menace" (1999) -- The movie was a lot less than the sum of its parts, but experiencing the hype was fun nonetheless. I bought tickets in advance to make sure we wouldn't miss opening day. Of course my son eventually accumulated a bunch of toys based on the film. "Austin Powers in Goldmember" (2002) -- We caught this goofy movie on a family vacation in Williamsburg, Va., at a theater filled with rowdy local kids. Comedies are always better with a full, raucous house. There have been plenty of movies that I liked better as movies than many of the films on this list, but it's great to look back on the ones that occupied special places in my life. I'm sure that's true for you too. Joe Ramirez Jurassic Park, Speed and Aliens are all on my summer list of memorable movies. I would add to that ET, Predator, Jaws and Die Hard 3. All may not have been summer movies but that is when I saw them
