About a year ago I was severely chastized for saying, without seeing it, that 'Last Action Hero' ripped off 'The Purple Rose of Cairo'. Now I've seen it, as promised, and can confidently say that it was indeed a rip-off. Though both 'Hero' and 'Rose' had something in common with 'Sherlock Jr.', they had much more in common with each other, and the Woody Allen movie came a few years before the Schwarzenegger movie. 'Sherlock Jr.' had only a one-way dream sequence. Both of these movies had two-way travel into and out of the movie world, and had some similar jokes and situations, as well as strong resonance throughout the later one with the former one. Unfortunately 'Last Action Hero' failed to acknowledge its debt to 'Purple Rose', though it did credit its use of scenes from 'The Seventh Seal' and Olivier's 'Hamlet'. This is not to say I didn't like 'Last Action Hero'. Many aspects of it were quite enjoyable, though the over-the-top action was as boring as it always is in any movie. I loved the brief use of Mozart music, and the many sight gags and references to other movies. I like dope a lot, although it could stand a trim closeit |
