I tend to think it's a little bit more than that. I would again go back to Nabokov's Lolita because it's familiar to many people and its central theme is still highly applicable to today's society. Take "teen porn" and "lolita porn" as well as these countdowns until underage girls become 18 and legal as examples. Although maybe there is somewhat of a protective element in what they feel for these girls, the predominant sensation is that of the desire to possess, to control. Nabokov's Humbert planned everything in his life in order to ensure that he had complete control over Lolita. Although the nurturing aspect might have existed, it definitely took the back seat to power and control. What eludes me is what exactly it is about Lolita that attracted someone like Humbert so much? He was supposed to have been handsome and educated, quite the catch for women his age. In fact, Lolita's mother thought exactly this. Why the pathological attraction to Lolita? It was self-destructive and disturbing. I don't know about people, but I tended not to empathize too much with Humbert, even if we were also led to see Lolita as less of the angel she initially appeared to be but rather a seductive and "impure" girl. I was talking to a Russian friend a few days ago about Lolita. She told me that Lolita corrupted Humbert and not the other way around. She said she should explain the Russian text to me, because I read the English version. But I still have my doubts. She had a history of sexual abuse, which she candidly reveals to other people. Ah, the human mind. It's a huge mystery. People explore outer space, black holes, infinite galaxies. I would like a road map to the human mind.
