Topic: Scott explains why Hollywood didn't make much cash this year... Forum: Film Hobbit
Really interesting article, Scott--well written and informative without very much personal finger-pointing. Good stuff. As for the topic itself, this COULD be the best thing to happen in a while. I immediately thought of Cloverfield as an ideal solution to the big-name star problem. Heaven forbid, Hollywood movies should start hiring more no-names. Given how many Hollywood stars want to be in independent movies regardless of the paycheck, and how Hollywood could save millions by hiring actors who don't cost millions, it could wind up with a kind of funny reversal situation. I'm kind of curious as to the specific numbers. The fact that movies now cost generally $100 million, as opposed to how much they did before--is the money going to CG effects? Costumes? Extras? All of the above, I realize, but it's hard to fathom all this costing ten times the amount it did two decades ago. I'm shocked that CG effects aren't going down in price--there must be a competitive market there that someone can feasibly undercut. Not to sound like a total indie snob, but this is kind of a good lesson for Hollywood to learn. It's gonna be very difficult to keep people in theatres as long as they can download bootlegs with ease, so their profit numbers aren't gonna be rising too much more. They're gonna have to get a lot more creative, both for advertising and financial expenses.
