Topic: The Bucket List - Discuss It Forum: Film Hobbit
The Bucket List I recently saw the film at the movie theaters and really enjoyed it. It slightly reminded me of the Grumpy Old Men series with the old guys who mess with each other and it had the same heart-warming and comedic qualities. While watching, there were a lot of things and questions that came to mind. I am going to pose one of the themes I saw as most prevalent in the movie and am excited to hear any feedback. (FYI this is my first movie forum post so be nice haha) In the film, Morgan Freedman’s character talk with Nicholson’s about how he grew up as a poor black man. He is talking about how he had no opportunities as a black man with out a college degree and with a pregnant girlfriend. It seems like Jack Nicholson’s character becomes a symbol for how whites are making up for the slavery and repression that they imposed on blacks for so long by giving Freedman’s character the chance to do all of these lavish things he never got the chance to (ie drive the Shelby he always dreamt of owning). There seem to be two classic portrayals: The rich white business man without faith. The poor black mechanic with nothing but God and values. These men then share what they have best to offer with one another. Nicholson shares his affluence and Freedman shares his faith.
