Yes I know it was not water, hence the slowness. But you do realize that adds to the stupidity right? It means he was in there for an even longer time...and no reaction at all. Total crock. An amazing effort those films, and what a laughable ending. The rings' power is a pretty important aspect in both the books and movie. Otherwise Gandalf would have just taken it when offered by Bilbo, and ruled as a benevolent and wonderful king for a long time. Gollum didn't react because of the ring, not because someone forgot to press the "animate writhing" button. I'm also not sure how it's a bad CGI moment. You're saying that the scene was "stupid," but if it was an intentional choice for the story then Gollum not writhing around isn't a reason to think the CGI work by WETA is somehow subpar.
