| Given the impossibility of understanding Hollywood accounting, I would say Serenity was a disappointment, not a bomb. This is because the movie did not cost a lot to make, and can serve as feeder to Firefly series box set as well. Each references the other, and sci fi fans did go see the movie and did rent the movie and/or buy the movie. What Firefly did not do was cross over into mainstream hit. Horror fans almost always push cheapo scare flicks into profitable territory, but sci fi fans do not seem to have that power (maybe because there are less of them and sci fi just costs more). Only the Star Wars franchise, or the occasional Alien or Stargate seem to grab the general public. What I find much more interesting is the perceived failure of internet buzz to make a hit. First Firefly, then Snakes on a Plane. Turk |
