On Lucy, I'm split. While I think that she was often sidesplitting on "I Love Lucy," I also agree with her detractors in this thread who feel she was sometimes bombastic, strident & irritating. To me, her funniest "I Love Lucy" moments are not the oft-cited, praised routines (the candy factory, etc.) but some of the other routines & line-readings -- for example, her Queen of the Gypsies in "The Operetta" singing her embarrassment over writing a bad check; when she thinks Ricky is leaving her for Grace Foster, & with just the right hiccup in her voice, she poignantly asks Ethel, "Don't I at least deserve a gold watch? or a letter of recommendation?"; & of course the howlingly funny putty nose when she's trying to camouflage her face for William Holden. Luckily, even when she wasn't funny on "I Love Lucy," Desi, Vivian & most of all Bill Frawley were around to save scenes & routines. |
