I think I will re-read the mythology and finish reading the Iliad, keeping in mind that this is the way the Greeks and their gods related, and forgetting my idealization of them, at least for the time being. It IS hard for anyone, me included, to realize that others have different takes on what a "god" is. Too often people are just talking past each other in that regard. If a non-theist has any advantage, it's that by not having a vested interest in any one view we can look at all the different faiths equally. I love learning about different religions, as humans have come up with so many interesting variations.
