Who wants to read about pettiness, especially in the gods? I want the gods to be perfect in their various aspects, and that rules out pettiness. No offence, but the Iliad has been going strong for what, 2,800 years, so plenty of people obviously do want to read about them. I actually like the Greek mythology - it has a certain logic to it. Why do bad things happen to good people? Because the Gods are dicks. I gave the wrong impression. I'm interested in most things Greek, but Aeschylus and Sophocles are much more interesting to me than the Iliad. Their plays are mostly based on Homer, but I like Homer as seen through their eyes, not so much straight up. The way Mary Renault presents the gods and heroes is best of all, to me, for example 'The Mask of Apollo' which I re-read recently, puts it all together: the theater, one of the Gods, Plato, and history, all in one great book. The two Theseus books too, and 'The Last of the Wine', about the Peloponnesian War and the time of Socrates, are all wonderful stuff. And now there's Steven Pressfield. But you can have the gods as dicks. Not interested, thank you. |
