One of the nice touches to the Iliad is that how petty and flawed the Gods turn out to be - it emphasies the heroic behaviours of the mortals. That's why I have a herd time reading the Illiad; the gods and the heroes are so petty. Who wants to read about pettiness, especially in the gods? I want the gods to be perfect in their various aspects, and that rules out pettiness. After all we live in a perfect world so the people who run it should be perfect. Assuming that the Greek gods are true, which is the only way I like to approach them, how can we model ourselves on the ideal (failing as we do, but capable of trying again), if they don't embody the ideal? "True" and "ideal" are mutually exclusive concepts. By 'true' I meant that they exist. When speaking of gods, 'true' and 'ideal' are not at all mutually exclusive. I suppose you're speaking from an atheist's point of view, which is cynical toward the whole universe, but I'm not, so we're not likely ever to communicate. |
