I was there for the start of the Silver Age, though .. I distinctly remember seeing Flash #105 on the stands, though I didn't buy it. But, like you, everything I picked up about the Golden Age, I picked up secondhand. Fandom was far less organized in the early 60's, the valuable books had not yet been consolidated in the hands of a few owners .. so, there were two points which made my experience better than yours: I was closer to the Golden Age in time, so there were more books still around, and, it was possible to stumble occasionally onto a second-hand store that didn't know what it had, and that's exactly what I did. I found Quality books, Fawcetts, EC's, and I don't remember what else .. two for fifteen cents. I bought hundreds of them .. Sadly, all gone now I met another nice guy online, who was trying to sell some of his Doll Man collection, and was bemoaning how the prices had fallen. I had picked up one or two from a dfifferenc source, because the price was so reasonable. IIRC, Doll Man was also a Quality Comic, although he was a little less than ideal, because his costume design wasn't quite as good as it might be, nor the name of his character. And in fact, the whole idea of a hero who is really tiny is one of the less workable ideas, because comics are about the heroes being larger than life. Did you give up your comics when you left home, and did your mother trash them? |
