The same entertainment could be produced on other subjects. I have to disagree. We've had "Alexander" and others that have been critical and box office disasters. However, "300" and "Gladiator" were megahits. A long time ago, when I criticized some kind of disco'd up track of Beethoven's Vth someone said at least it exposed young people to something which at its core had some merit. Maybe this is how we should view movies like "Gladiator" or "300" since it's the only way younger people today get exposed to ancient Western history, since Hollywood seems incapable of rendering a good, entertaining and honest depiction of ancient history? Ain't USENET grand? I find myself agreeing with both RichA and Calvin in the same post. Certainly there are a crazy number of classical stories that would make great films, and how few of them have we actually seen? Xenophon and THE WARRIORS? But bearing in mind that Hollywood can turn just about any source material into crap, perhaps we should be less critical of the end result and just happy that they tried in the first place. Marcus Aurelius in Germany makes a nice change from buddy cop movies. Yes, and I liked most of Gladiator, and thought most of 300 was watchable. I don't have a strong case to make. Something about the ancient world, other than religious epics, is better than nothing. I hope we're not going to make the graphic novel the standard source, though. Frank Miller may be great, but once is enough. Keep him away from the Peloponnesian War, please. Alcabiades was outrageous enough without artistic license taken. Aren't you boneheads going to mention "Troy"? That was an exercise in lameness, too. I'd forgotten the name, much as I did the whole movie. So you're retracting your previous horse pucky about historical epics, then?
