I was thinking how cool that would be to have a an entire season of some vintage TV series on one disc. It would depend on things like the total length of the source material, whether it's color or B&W, and the number and kind of audio tracks, subtitles, and extras that were included. It's also possible with any of these digital discs (including DVD) to fiddle with the compression in order to get longer playing time. In any case, a single sided dual layer HD DVD (HD) disc holds 30GB, a Blu-ray (BD) 50GB. A single sided dual layer DVD holds less than 9GB, although you can't do a direct time-based comparison of DVD with the high def formats because high def uses more disc space per minute of viewing time. An HD disc can be dual sided, holding a total of 60GB, but I don't know if two sided discs are permitted by BD's spec or even possible with its manufacturing process. So HD actually has a 10GB greater capacity per disc than BD, while BD has a 20GB greater capacity per side than HD. How this would work out in fitting material onto disc sides is anybody's guess, but I suspect that consumers would object strenuously to having to get up and flip a disc in the middle of a movie or episode. Wikipedia has a a page comparing DVD, HD, and BD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_high_definition_optical_disc _formats Not to veer too far OT, but if it's a questoin about having a library of tv shows readily available, then we may be close to bypassing optical media entirely as streaming video is getting close to being reasonable to most people. I have an MVix and have converted all of my tv shows into Divx and store it either on my computer or the MVix's HDD. I've done silimarly for many of my favorite movies. I havent' watched media content in a while. My friend uses his XBox simliarly. Depending on the codec and the quality of the source (and the quality desired of the vid), you can have an acceptable version of a tv show for around 250-300MBs each. Movies i ahve at 750MB per hour. With 500GB HDD ~$100, that's quite a few tv shows with the convenience of not having to swap media ever. Of course, there's the upfront effort of encoding them. But i suppose if you buy the media, then it's morally acceptable (if technically still illegal) to download vids from torrents, etc. -goro- |
