I don't see much difference between John Connor and John Carpenter. Connor has a big-buddy Terminator to protect him; Carpenter has a big-buddy robot named Gort. How is it that the second such allusion is acceptable, and the first is not? Because Clifton made it? Because it's stupid. In the Day the Earth Stood Still, you have a personally nonviolent messenger, bringing a message of peace backed by by a threat of general destruction from an unstoppable force if we don't become nicer, who is killed by foolish humans and ascends into Heaven. Gort is not particularly a Christlike part of the story. In T4 you have a soldier who shoots his problems until achieving victory. |
