I Gee that brings me back. I have a number of Smullyan's books at home somewhere. A: Yes, it is; Goedel _proved_ that there are certain things that are true but that cannot be proved. B: It couldn't be, and even if it _were_ true, it could never be proved! Oddly enough, as funny as that exchange is, Godel *did* prove it. Back in the eighties Douglas Hofstader wrote this ox-stunning size book called "Godel, Escher, Bach - an eternal golden braid" in which he spends a good 300 pages tooling up the readers on the skills necessary to understand how it' was done. If you can find a copy, and aren't adverse to doing brain-hurting homework on a recreational read, find a copy. It's worth it just for "Crab Canon". * -- * PV something like badgers--something like lizards--and something like corkscrews. It took 300 pages to prove some things are unprovable? Or merely to prepare you to accept the proof that some things are unprovable? -- Ken from Chicago |
