Quote:"madkevin" <madkevin@golden.net> said: Interesting... unfortunately the movie doesn't stand alone and the science is atrocious. It's acceptable for a sci-fi film to do the impossible, like FTL travel, but it's not acceptable to make dumb mistakes like people walking around on a planet like Crematoria. It's a fantasy (or "sci-fantasy", to be really geekily specific) movie, dummy. You might as well complain that "Lord Of The Rings" blows because trees can't really walk. Dummy? Ahhh, I see the resident intellectual has decided to show off his wit, LOL. Lord of the Rings is fantasy, they can do what they want; Riddick is sci- fi and you're just making excuses for Twohy's lameness. They're BOTH fantasy films. "Lord Of The Rings" is the sub-genre known as "high fantasy", pretty much invented by Tolkien. Other works in that genre include stuff like Guy Gavriel Kay's "Fionevar Tapestry" series, or the novels of Stephen Donaldson. "The Chronicles Of Riddick" is "science-fantasy" - i.e., a fantasy story with science-fiction trappings. "Star Wars" is probably the most popular example of this, but you can trace the genre back to Edgar Rice Burroughs and the John Carter: Warlord Of Mars series. Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element" is a more recent example. And, for the record, I enjoyed the movie too, which I already mentioned, but I'm not talking about whether or not the movie is any good. It's a deeply stupid movie, with plot holes the size of a Mack truck and no discernable sense of logic, internal consistency or even basic storytelling technique. But it ain't a science-fiction movie. Kevin "Pendantic" Cogliano
