British - among others - arms merchants had been supplying That's different from "MADE in Japan", no? <G> Quote:anti-Tokugawa (later Meiji...) forces in Choshu and Satsuma provinces - among others - with modern European firearms for years, Sigh. Let me clarify what I was trying to say.... Regardless of the fact that "modern firearms" were available in Japan IN REAL LIFE, the original poster (and several websites on "bloopers", which were probably his source for the comment) have Id'd the muzzle-loaders in one scene of the movie as muskets, not rifles. Obviously, *something* made some people watching the movie think the muzzle-loading firearms in that scene were muskets. Could just be simple ignorance/confusion on the part of the watchers, or it could be that for some reason the filmmakers DID choose to use muskets for that scene. You said that the filmmakers depicted them using outdated weapons, then replacing those outdated weapons with more modern ones. To clarify my response, I meant that if the filmmaker's aim was to show them replacing outdated weapons (rather than using the latest and greatest as John's reply implied), it was more likely that the outdated firearms depicted *could* have been muskets - not that it was more likely that real life soldiers *would* have been carrying muskets. It also, pure and simple, could indeed be a blooper/continuity issue- IOW, prop muskets being used when they should have been prop muzzle-loading rifles- but that seems less likely since it sounds like the filmmakers strove for accuracy. My original- and still unanswered <G>- question is, "How could someone watching the movie tell which type of muzzleloaders the actors are carrying/firing in that scene?", not "Which type of muzzleloader would more likely have been carried in real life?" or "Which type of muzzleloader would it have been most logical for the filmmakers to depict?". IOW, was there anything *specific* IN THE MOVIE which postitively ID's the type of guns in that scene- I mean things like dialog, visually being able to ID the make of gun, etc. Quote:Search on "Thomas Blake Glover" and you'll find all sorts of stuff. Thanks- I'll do that.
