It's more what electriclite said, where it's obvious that they started to think beyond the actual performances and thought hmmm Blanchett already has an Oscar for portraying a real person so why don't we just vote for the underdog first-time nominee who was nonetheless very good in Michael Clayton... Like I said before it's more than just speculation if you look at their track record. Sometimes the performance is so good they can't not vote for it (DDL this year) but sometimes they're motivated by something else completely and not by the actual performance. I mean, the perfect example is Adrien Brody winning for The Pianist over Day-Lewis' Gangs of New York. You think the holocaust didn't help push that vote on Brody's side? Come onnnn dude, open your eyes.
