It was a remarkable Oscar worthy performance. Who knows why Swinton won but given the Academy's record i think best performance is not the primary reason. We don't know their motivations, like you said. We don't know their tastes, their opinions, their actual votes. And to try and guess why somebody won over another is pointless. But to say that their minds are not on the performances sounds like sour grapes. Maybe they honestly thought that Blanchett wasn't as great as you did. God forbid. And Stallone didn't beat Deniro. Peter Finch did (for Network).
